Victory in Europe Event

About VE Day

The news of Germany’s surrender, although long expected, was an occasion of wild rejoicing. In Britain, years of drabness and belt-tightening were forgotten as an entire nation took to the streets.

On the 8 May 1945, at 3pm the Prime Minister Winston Churchill addressed the nation, the radio broadcast being relayed to people in the streets via loudspeakers. Although Japan was still to be conquered, he said, the war in Europe would end at midnight.

Massed in front of Buckingham Palace, the crowds began to chant: ‘We want the King! We want the King!’ The royal family appeared on the balcony to roars from the crowd. Hundreds of thousands of people began to celebrate.
