8F 48624 Restoration Page

LMS 8F 2-8-0 8F locomotive number 48624 was built by the Southern Railway at Ashford in 1943, and was withdrawn from service in 1965 after spending all it's life stationed at Willesden depot in London, then it lay in Barry scrapyard in South Wales, before being rescued with the intention of restoring and running on the Peak Rail line in 1981.

Steam locomotive restoration is not for the faint hearted and a dedicated group of volunteers from the 49624 Society and Peak Rail were rewarded on Saturday 25 April 2009 when LMS Stanier 8F 2-8-0 locomotive 8624 moved under its own power for the first time in almost 44 years - the culmination of a 28 year restoration of the locomotive from scrap condition.

For those who were unable to see her Alan Taylor has posted a video of the event on You Tube.

JULY 2007

The backhead work and boiler cladding has been completed, with this done the boiler has been stripped, and the cab and it lifted back out of the frames with a hired in crane. Superheater flue work, and ashpan work continue.

March 2007

Pipework and cladding are nearing completion. We will be starting to strip everything off again in the next couple of months and remove the boiler for re-tubing and testing.

May 2006

Cladding is in the process of manufacture, and is being trial fitted. Smokebox work is underway, with pipework for the blower being manufactured, and holes being drilled for the new chimney, handrails, and so on. The vacuum ejector has been getting some attention, and its exhaust pipework repaired. Lubrication work has been underway also, and nuts and nozzles are being machined for the copper pipwork. The new crown stay nuts are all made and fitted, and the joint faces on the backhead are being prepared for fittings. Lubrication system work is underway also. The tender tank is being cleaned out internally ready for a repaint. The old chimney was sold, with a highest bid of £270.

June 2005

BOILER - Threaded rivets are in the course of manufacture for the smokebox, to refit it to the boiler barrel. The smokebox sacrificial plates are being manufactured. The main steam pipes have been refitted, although this necessitated some modifications to the new smokebox to allow it to fit. The refurbished superheater header has been refitted. The small tube holes are bing cleaned up in the tubeplates, although two hole have been discovered that need some repair. The firehole doors have been refitted.
CLADDING - The crinoline irons are being fettled, and the top feed clacks cover has been made.
TENDER - The brakes require some work yet, as the brake shaft bearings appear to be a bit tight. The tender is to be shortly repainted.
CHIMNEY - A new chimney has been cast, with thanks to the SVR.

November 2004

The boiler has returned, and promptly got planted in the frames. The contract repairs have included the foundation ring being rivetted back in, and the copper lap joint repair at the front of the firebox and other inner firebox repairs completed. Tubing and superheater work remain to complete on the boiler.

March 2004

Boiler Work The ashpan is being modified, minor modifications have been carried out to the water sieves in the tender and the brake blocks have been fitted / re-aligned.

Boiler
Half the firebox welding is now complete at Crewe. A small shed is being built in Darley Dale yard to provide a temporary workshop for backhead repairs when the boiler returns.

The boiler was despatched to the Crewe LNWR workshops in October for the completion of repairs - some copper welding to build up inner firebox thickness, completion of repair to the lap joints at the front of the box, re-rivetting of the foundation ring. Work completed prior to this included replacing stays in the front throat plate, firebox sides, shoulders and below the door - at least 100. The new section of barrel where the smokebox attaches was also welded in, and the front tube plate thickness built up at the bottom. This then allowed the smokebox to be fitted. On the boiler side still new stay nuts have also been under manufacture. The regulator valve has been remachined, and the water trays and sieve plates fitted, and the atomiser feed pipe repaired. Superheater element manufacture has been progressing, the cladding is also under manufacture. The hole for the sandgun has been blanked off.

Boiler Work
Reg surveys some work going on under the cab, I have to say that this photo is some time ago, all the motion is complete, and the loco has been up and down the line since!

Workshop
During January the main work involved taking delivery and installing the new milling machine, lathe, pillar drill and small surface grinder in the van body. These are all operational now. The van body is currently having some repair and a repaint, weather permitting!
